Is Your Roof Ready For What New England Throws At It?
Massachusetts weather tests roofs hard. Nor’easters, ice dams, freeze-thaw cycles, and heavy snow loads are all on the annual agenda starting as early as October. By August, your roof has already been through a spring and summer of UV exposure, rain, and wind.
Walk the perimeter of your home and look up. From the ground, can you see any shingles that are curling, missing, or visibly cracked? Are the flashing seams around your chimney, skylights, or plumbing vents intact? These are all high-priority items before winter arrives.
If your roof is more than 15 years old and hasn’t been professionally evaluated, August is an excellent time for an inspection. A roof that looks “okay” to the untrained eye can have significant vulnerabilities that only become apparent once it’s under load from ice and snow.
What’s Happening In Your Gutters And Downspouts?
In Greater Boston, gutters work in two seasons: the heavy fall rain season and the spring snowmelt. Both put significant volume through your gutter system. If that system is clogged, damaged, or improperly pitched, water finds somewhere else to go — usually into your fascia, into your foundation, or pooling at the base of your home.
While the tree debris of fall hasn’t arrived yet, August is still a good time to clear out any debris, check that all sections are properly secured, and confirm that downspouts are directing water well away from the foundation.

You’ve been cooling your home all summer. Before the season flips and you’re asking your heating system to take over, have both systems serviced. For oil and gas furnaces especially, annual service before the heating season is not optional — it’s a safety measure.
Crawl Spaces And Basements: What Survived The Summer?
Massachusetts homes frequently have full basements or crawl spaces, and in a humid summer, these spaces can develop moisture conditions that lead to mold, wood rot, and structural damage. August is the point in the year when summer moisture has had the longest time to accumulate.
If you have a sump pump, test it. If your basement has any musty odor, that’s a moisture signal. Look at the rim joist — this area is a common location for moisture intrusion and insulation failures.
