Should I test my home for mold?
EPA and CDC state mold testing is not needed to perform mold remediation as the remediation process is the same regardless of the mold type present in your home.
Does this mean you do not need to test for mold? Not at all. If you think you have mold you should have your home inspected for mold.
Mold in lower levels of the home can become airborne and migrate through the home via the thermal stack effect where negative air pressure in the attic draws air from the lower levels upward. Testing will help identify if mold is migrating from the affected area to other areas of the home.
Whether you are having a Mold Screening or a full Mold Assessment, mold testing provides supporting data for the observations made during the visual inspection. Testing will set a baseline for clearance testing (post-remediation verification) to ensure the remediation company actually removed the mold from your home. As many allergies are specific to the type of mold, testing may help your healthcare professional determine your level of sensitivity in your home.
