In the 2021 version of the International Energy Conservation Code, there are new requirements for insulating the building envelope that will impact construction costs in the coming years.
In attics, the previous requirement was R-49 or about 16 inches. The new requirement is R-60 or approximately 20-26 inches depending on the material. For walls, the total R factor will be R-30 which includes R-20 insulation and R10 for the materials of the mass wall assembly.
These changes only apply to new construction and older homes are not required to update their existing homes to conform to these standards. As older homes were designed to function any significant changes to your insulation should first be reviewed by a qualified professional to ensure new installations do not interfere with existing ventilation and construction materials.
